Every Athangudi tile carries the fingerprints of its maker. Born in the village of Athangudi, near Chettinad — a land of merchant princes and palatial mansions — these tiles have graced floors for over a century. Made from locally sourced sand, cement, and natural mineral oxides, each piece is a living relic of South India's most revered craft tradition.
The Ancient Process
A hand-forged brass frame is placed on a smooth glass plate. This glass surface gives Athangudi tiles their signature lustre — a natural mirror-finish that no machine can replicate.
Natural mineral oxides — never synthetic
Natural mineral oxides — sourced from the earth itself — are mixed and poured into the brass sections. No artificial dyes. The colors you see today are the same colors Chettinad nobles walked upon generations ago.
A fine cement mixture is pressed over the pigments under controlled pressure. The tile absorbs and bonds with the colors from below. No surface painting. The pattern lives within the tile, not on it.
21 days of natural curing
Tiles are cured naturally under the Tamil Nadu sun for 21 days. No kilns. No artificial heat. The patient sun does what no machine can — it breathes life into the tile slowly, creating that dense, lasting character.
The finished tile is turned over, removing the glass to reveal a surface so smooth it feels cool to the touch — yet textured enough to grip bare feet safely. Perfection isn't made. It's crafted, one pour at a time.
